Audience Engagement team is responsible for managing and/or
supporting the bulk of the foundation's flagship and ELT channels,
the foundation's website, our email program, and our web-based
storytelling platform, Ideas. Our work requires constant and close
collaboration with stakeholders across and outside the foundation.
Channels & Audience engagement sits within the broader Global
Content & Campaigns team and, in turn, under the overarching Global
Communications Division.The Senior Communication Officer, Email and
Web Content Strategy is a key member of the Channels and Engagement
team in the Communications Division. The SCO leads editorial and
technical strategy for the foundation's email subscriber programs,
The Optimist and Portraits of Human Potential, as well primary
digital storytelling platform, Ideas, which exists within
gatesfoundation.org. The role involves a combination of high-level
strategy and editorial direction, while also being "in-the-weeds"
on execution as needed, whether that's oversight of email
production and QA handled by our email agency partners, or working
closely with our internal web producer to ensure every detail is
ironed out for web publishing. You should have expertise in three
key areas:
- Email and content marketing, particularly for an audience of
influential individuals within the global health and development
space (such as policymakers, government officials, media,
academics).
- Tech familiarity and expertise with coordinating and applying
CRM, CMS, and email marketing systems.
- And strong editorial judgement and a sense for stories,
including experience working with writers and driving a strong
editorial voice.Reporting to the Deputy Director of Channels &
Engagement, the position is based in Washington, D.C. or Seattle,
WA *This position is a limited-term position for 12 months.
Relocation will not be provided. Candidates who have directly led
global email and content programs for story-minded news or advocacy
organizations in the global development space are of high interest.
Candidates should also possess a strong instinct for project
management, an ability to navigate a highly matrixed organizational
setup with many partners; and should be able to confidently
advocate for their editorial and strategic point of view while
still soliciting and parsing input. We anticipate about 20 percent
of this role's time be on program strategy, execution, and
insights; 40 percent on story development and working with writers,
content team, and handling input across internal partners; and 40
percent on email/Ideas production management, including time spent
in CRM and email software management. You should be equally
comfortable working at a high strategic level as they are writing
subject lines or building email sends. Candidates should expect to
work closely with internal and external partners to build a
vibrant, global community of influential subscribers who engage
with excellent, story-led content, becoming encouraged to act on
issues ranging from global health to gender equality to climate
change. What You'll Do
- Create and deploy an audience engagement strategy for email
subscribers, including acquisition, retention, and activation
phases, in collaboration with an external email vendor and internal
paid media lead.
- Partner with the measurement and insights team, which is also
part of the Communication's Division, to better understand target
audiences and draw insights from our ongoing work. Regularly
communicate insights and use data to optimize and improve program
performance.
- Supervise key agency and vendor partners to regularly produce
email sends, including being responsible for email content,
building modules within email software, and leading approvals
within the organization.
- Manage a team of freelance writers to develop appropriate
stories for our Ideas platform, ensuring a strong editorial voice
and storytelling lens across Ideas content. Coordinate copy editing
and deliver final copy for publishing.
- Work with content leads and the gatesfoundation.org web
producer to ensure visual and narrative cohesion to all published
storytelling content.
- Act as institutional authority on email marketing standard
processes and share expertise.
- Work with the foundation regional and country offices to ensure
thoughtful global expansion and representation of email programs
and Ideas stories. Regular partner management with regions and
local writers as an ongoing component of story development.Your
Experience The ideal candidate will be a sharp, creative strategist
and excellent writer/editor. They will be able to deliver an
inspiring and engaging experience for email subscribers and web
visitors. They will have direct experience in leading and building
email sends within email software programs such as Pardot, as well
as a working understanding of CRM systems such as Salesforce. Clear
and compelling writing is an important requirement, as is a
willingness to learn, optimize, and try new things. The foundation
is a very collaborative environment. Successful candidates will
enjoy and excel at working within matrixed and cross-functional
teams. An understanding of the broader digital and communications
landscape will be an asset, as well as having a strong sense of
curiosity and excellent editorial judgment. Global experience is a
plus. Additional qualifications include:
- Understanding standard processes in email and content marketing
strategy
- Proven ability to work in email software programs and CRM
systems.
- Demonstrated editorial judgment and experience working with
writers that results in compelling story-led content.
- Preference for international experience and shown cultural
competency vis- -----vis areas of the globe where the foundation
works.
- Experience in a dynamic oriented environment with demonstrated
ability to juggle multiple and contending demands while
establishing priorities and providing continual attention to
detail.
- Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills,
in positions requiring communication with a broad and diverse
audience on a range of complex and technical issues.
- Ability to offer creative solutions to complex problems and
translate options into implementable solutions.
- Demonstrated open-mindedness to new challenges and
situations
- Being a strong and valued "roll up your sleeves"
teammate/colleague with a sense of humor and humility.
- Passion for the foundation's mission.Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in relevant field.
- A minimum of 7+ years of dynamic professional experience in a
similar leadership role in communications, journalism, public
policy, or a related field, including management experience,
collaborative experience with a wide range of internal and external
partners, and excellent communications skills.
- Experience working in non-profit/public health, government,
communications agency, news organization, or private sector
organization is strongly preferred.
- Direct experience supervising email programs including working
in email marketing software and CRM systems.*Must be able to

to $249,500 USD. We recognize high-wage market differences in
Seattle and Washington D.C., where our offices are located. The
range for this role in these locations is $181,200 to $271,800 USD.
